JOURNAL #26 – The next thing

Here I am again. At the beginning of a new story. Not just a new book to write, but a new fictional world to inhabit for a year or two.

And I can’t decide.

I’ve long wanted to do something with the sea. For years, I’ve drifted back to tales of selkies, mermaids, abandoned lighthouses. Oceanic ghost stories float through my head, never quite taking shape but teasing, always teasing the form they might take.

I’m trying to work it out.

For the next month or so, I’m busy with Mothtown promo work, and also a little distracted as one of my super secret book projects is finally out on submission. That one is dark, mythic, and aching with blood so who knows what’ll happen with it. It could be nothing. It could fizzle away like so many projects do. I’ve not had this happen yet, but perhaps it’s inevitable at some point.

I just hope it’s not now. Because this book is too delicious.

Anyway, I’m looking ahead to the next thing now, as I ought to, while the goddesses of fate decide. My thinking is I’ll plan until Christmas and then I’ll begin writing in the new year. Right now, I’m daunted by the blank page but it’s exciting. Feels like I’m packing for an adventure I don’t know about yet. There’s a blank ticket in my pocket and I’m about to board the plane.

See you soon,
X
